I was lucky enough to have the chance to visit Hong Kong and Macau staying in luxurious properties in both locations. I was truly spoilt.

The trip kicked off with a lovely surprise of travelling business class on Cathay Pacific’s new A330 product. The seats were herringbone, similar to Virgin Atlantic’s upper class product. I ordered a gluten free meal, which I believed to be one of the best airline meals I have had in ages. A scrumptious salmon with vegetables and salad; followed by fresh fruit and sorbet. They offer a nice selection of wines and champagnes.

Upon arrival into Hong Kong we were met and transferred by staff from The Intercontinental Hotel. There was one staff member provided for each person who escorted you to your room and I was shown all the facilities and services provided by the hotel. Since it was quite late at this stage we enjoyed a cocktail in the lobby which overlooked Victoria Harbour enjoying the wonderful views and lights from the city skyline before retiring for the night in the most comfortable, not to mention “massive” bed.

The next morning I enjoyed breakfast in the Club Lounge situated on level 2, before departing on a Hong Kong Island Tour. I visited Victoria Peak by Peak Tram and enjoyed a panoramic view of Victoria Harbour, later to Aberdeen Fishing Village and then down to Repulse Bay passing Jackie Chan’s house. We visited Stanley Market and found that there were plenty of good bargains especially when it came to silk ties and pashmina’s.

The next day was spent at Disneyland but I must say I was not overly impressed. Besides the fact that it was pouring with rain, I found that there was only one ride, Space Mountain and the rest was mainly shops and shows. It is quite a small theme park when you compare it with the one in Paris and the original one in Anaheim. I was able to do the park within a couple of hours. I did however enjoy a character breakfast at the Enchanted Gardens situated in The Disneyland Hotel, which is where we had breakfast before entering the theme park.

Due to the bad weather, the next day’s agenda was cancelled, so we spent the day at the shopping malls and then enjoyed watching Sex and The City at one of the cinemas in town, followed by a farewell dinner at Chao Inn, No 1 Peking Road, which was a yum-cha styled dinner. Situated on the top level, we enjoyed The Symphony of Lights show at 8pm, which is a multi-media light show that takes place every night at 8pm for approx 15mins.

The last day was spent at the 2008 Dragon Boat Show Festival, later followed by a visit to the old-century Man Mo Temple and then the bustling Tai Po markets.

Later in the afternoon, we took the hydrofoil from Kowloon across to Macau where we enjoyed a one-hour ride across. Finally arriving at The Venetian, we retired for the night.

The following day we spent time travelling through the city and learning about the culture of this Portuguese influenced enclave of the Peoples Republic of China.

We visited the Historic centre of Macau, places such as:

- Barra Square
- Lilau Square
- St Augustine’s Square
- Senado Square
- Cathedral Square
- Dominic’s Square.

These major urban squares and street landscapes provide the linkage for the succession of over twenty monuments, including A-Ma Temple, Moorish Barracks, Mandarin’s House, St Lawrence’s Church, St Joseph’s Seminary, Dom Pedro V Theatre, Augustine’s Church, Ruins of St Paul’s Cathedral, Casa Garden, altogether known as the “Historic Centre of Macau.”

Later that night we ate at well-known Portuguese restaurant, followed by a night of strolling around town and through the casinos. The Venetian Hotel and Casino, being the biggest hotel and casino, grabbed my attention the most, and so I preferred to spend most of my time there to explore this magnificent new establishment.

The last day we visited Fisherman’s Wharf and had a magnificent Macanese Lunch, then lastly a daring walk around level 61 of Skywalk X. It was a windy day, and it would have to be one of the scariest things I have done in a while. However the views over China were just sensational. A definite MUST if travelling to Macau.

Finally it was time to leave and we took the hydrofoil back to Hong Kong. This time we took the foil back to Hong Kong airport, which only took 40 mins. What surprised me was the fact that we were able to check in from the ferry terminal in Macau, all the way back to Sydney. It was great that we didn’t have to drag our bags around anymore. I was a bit sceptical at first but when I later saw my bag at Sydney airport, I was relieved. It actually made it.
