Tour No. 1  ITALY
   Departing 15th OCTOBER 2008 -  22 days

Rome  Pompeii  Sansepolcro  Cortona  San Gimignano  Florence  Venice  Milan
Cost:  Twin share $9850  Single supplement $1350

Italy in the autumn is a magical experience, imagine moving through the exquisite Tuscan landscape early in the morning, mist rising, autumn colours and the voice of Italian tenors resonating through the coach, it will bring tears to your eyes. Imagine cruising the Grand Canal in Venice contemplating the fading grandeur of this, the most romantic city in Europe. Imagine five nights in a Tuscan villa where the hosts make their own wines, cure their own olives and supply us with fresh vegetables from their garden. We will travel between cities by deluxe coach and as always we will be centrally located and walk to most venues once we arrive, experiencing first hand the sights and sounds of Italy.

MILAN Possibly the most famous painting in the world Leonardo’s Last Super is in Milan at the Church of Santa Maria della Grazie. Though affected by time it will be a memorable experience to see the seminal work of such a great master. The Duomo is the second largest church in Italy and the second largest gothic cathedral; it towers above everything and reduces people to the size of ants. Everything in Milan including its reputation for fashion and design is big. Those who love Italian food will find several traditional favourites there, cutlet milanese, ossobucco and risotto milanese.

VENICE La Serenissima! Named thus because it is so quiet without the cars and motorbikes which populate every other Italian city. Venice is small and so beautiful (lots to draw and paint) but it is easy to get lost wandering down the tiny back streets and lanes. Our hotel is central so we will walk across small bridges over canals to get to Piazza San Marco and the great basilica with its five golden domes. We will cruise down the Grand Canal in a vaporetto (waterbus) to visit Peggy Guggenheim’s collection of 20th century art at the Palazzo Venier die Leoni and then to the Accademia to see Titian, Tintoretto and Tiepolo. We travel through the lagoons to the island of Burano and finally look at the work acquired from the Venice Biennale at the Museum of Modern Art.

FLORENCE Home of the Renaissance! In the Accademia Michelangelo’s David has the power to move viewers to tears. Donatello’s David in the Bargello Museum is younger but no less beautiful. The Duomo, Florence’s great cathedral towers above its companion Renaissance buildings and the Baptistry which hosts Ghiberti’s Doors of Paradise and magnificent Byzantine mosaics. Fra Angelico painted surprisingly contemporary frescoes in the monks’ cells in the museum of San Marco, an inspiring collection of images.
SANSEPOLCRO is a fifteenth century Renaissance town birthplace of painter Piero della Francesca. Our Tuscan villa is here and Alessandra and her family, now old friends will host us. Alessandra has renovated a 15th century farm building creating a number of beautifully appointed apartments that we commandeer for our stay. We can walk from here into the town centre where there is subject matter both rural and Renaissance to draw and paint.

CORTONA & SAN GIMIGNANO With Sansepolcro as our base we will take day trips capturing the Tuscan landscape on the way and then explore what these wonderful hill towns with traditional lifestyles, beautiful piazzas and panoramic views have to offer.

POMPEII We will need most of a day to explore this ancient Roman city excavated in modern times. Mt. Vesuvius erupted in 79AD killing 2,000 of its 20,000 inhabitants sadly capturing them in a moment in time. There is so much that has been preserved, buildings, artwork, infrastructure that gives a fascinating picture of the wealth and sophistication of ancient Rome, the frescoes will amaze!

The island of ISCHIA lies in the most westerly part of the Gulf of Naples. It has acquired an international reputation due to its numerous thermal and thermo-mineral springs. It has a colourful history including falling into the hands of the Turkish pirate Barbarossa for a few years. There will be views around the coastline and from the Tower overlooking the island and the bay that should inspire some good drawing and painting by our travelling artists.

ROME we end our Italian pilgrimage in the city of fountains and ruins - the Trevi Fountain, Bellini’s fountains in Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, the Sistine Ceiling and St. Peter’s Basilica, the Colosseum, San Clemente will reveal to us the majesty and mystery of ancient Rome plus we see Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, Raphael and other greats of the Italian Renaissance.

Tour No. 2  SPAIN
   Departing 5th April 2009 -  23 days

Barcelona   Bilbao   Toledo   Granada   Ronda   Cordoba   Madrid
Cost: Twin share $9980   Single supplement $1450

Spain is a wonderful country, the people, food, wine, music, dance and of course the art. We visit Barcelona on the east coast, Bilbao in the far north, and then Toledo followed by Grenada, Ronda and Cordoba in the south. We see small villages on the way and finish in the central capital of Madrid. Spain is a big country so we travel in a deluxe coach, fully air conditioned and very comfortable. This allows us to travel in style, and then be taken directly to our hotel upon arrival in each city. We will be located centrally so once we arrive we will walk to most venues, allowing us to experience each place physically – see the sights, smell the smells and be amongst the Spanish people. We will spend time in the old parts of the cities, the squares and the historical buildings. There will be ample time for those wishing to draw and paint to do so and tuition will be given at all levels. In the evening we will review the day’s efforts over a glass of wine – a most pleasant way to create.

BARCELONA is Gaudi’s city, the wonderful “Modernista” architect whose Sagrada Familia and Parc Guell are icons of the city – wonderful subject matter for painters and drawers. Jean Miro is another child of Barcelona and we visit his foundation on Montjuic. Picasso also lived and worked in Barcelona and his museum is wonderful. We also look at the history of the Catalan region visiting the magnificent collection of the Museum of Catalan art. We are introduced to flamenco dancing, Spanish guitar, paella and much more in this the greatest of Spanish cities.

BILBAO home of the fabulous Guggenheim Museum designed by Frank Ghery. Situated by the river its organic forms clad in silver titanium have enormous presence and even before you enter you know you are experiencing a work of architectural genius. Inside the building continues to inspire, a fitting complement to the cutting edge art on display.

TOLEDO Our bus takes us south to Toledo, the home of Toledo steel and Don Quixote country. The landscape will be new and different and this can be recorded visually along the way. El Greco became a major artist working in Toledo for many years. We visit his house, now a museum and see a moving collection of his portraits of saints. The history of Toledo has involved the Romans, Visigoths, Arabs, Jews and Christians and there is much to be seen from this rich and varied past.

GRANADA We travel to our first city in Andalusia home of the Alhambra, one of the wonders of the world. Perched on top of a hill overlooking the city the complex includes the 14th century Alhambra Palace, stunning Islamic architecture, the Generalife, the Summer Palace with its magnificent gardens and the Alcazar (fort) which has panoramic views of the plains below and the Sierra Nevada. A wonderful venue to draw.

RONDA is one of the stunning “white towns” of Andalusia. It sits on top of a very high cliff overlooking the magnificent El Tajo Gorge. Ronda has a colourful history and one of the largest, oldest and most beautiful bullrings in Spain. We have three nights here with ample time to explore and capture the magic of traditional Spain.

CORDOBA was the capital of the Umayyad dynasty for three hundred years from the 8th to the 11th century. We visit the Jewish quarter and the Great Mosque belonging to that era. Prepare to gasp, this is stunning Moorish architecture.

MADRID has a reputation for being one of the liveliest cities in the world. It has regal buildings, wide streets, hundreds of fountains and restaurants, fabulous shopping plus the Prado, one the greatest galleries in Spain and Europe. It houses dozens of painting by Velazquez including “Las Meninas” and dozens by Franciso Goya including his famous “The Third of May, 1808”. Picasso’s “Guernica” is in the Queen Sophia Museum, an absolute must as is the National Archaeological Museum which houses collections of prehistoric, Iberian, Roman, Visigothic and Islamic artefacts. It is all truly wonderful!
